Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Section at the MCG Health System in Augusta, Georgia is committed to providing children a brighter future through advanced medical treatment, family-centered care and innovative research.  Our multidisciplinary team cares for infants, children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and clotting disorders.  Our team offers children and families the emotional and physical support they need during their treatment journey.  As a member of the Minority-Based Community Clinical Oncology Program and Children's Oncology Group, our patients have access to the latest treatments for children with cancer and blood disorders.  Because we have a trained team of specialists, our patients battling cancer and blood diseases get unsurpassed care.  Our team includes four full-time, one part-time pediatric hematologists/oncologist, a general practitioner, a pediatric oncology nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, trained oncology nurses, social workers and child life specialist.

Dedicated Inpatient Unit
The beautiful state of the art Children's Medical Center has a dedicated inpatient unit for children with cancer and blood diseases.  The unit has a hepa filtration system to protect our patients from developing nosocomial infections.  The unit includes a large family lounge, kitchenette, laundry facility, two developmentally based activity rooms, and a solarium and family consult area.  These facilities make coping during a most stressful time easier for our patients and their families.

Pediatric Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center
Our Pediatric Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center offers a variety of services for the hemophilia patient population.  Diagnosis, evaluation and management strategies to all hereditary hemorrhagic or thrombotic disorders are offered as well as comprehensive evaluations including medical, social, nursing, dental, nutritional, physical therapy, surgical and genetic evaluation.  Referrals to multiple pediatric subspecialties are available.

Pediatric Sickle Cell Clinic
The Pediatric Sickle Cell Clinic came into existence in the early 1970s in conjunction with the Adult Clinic and the Comprehensive Center.  The program is currently funded by the Georgia Department of Human Resources.  The Pediatric Clinic has been a participant in many clinical research projects, including the stroke prevention studies (S.T.O.P. study).  The STOP study is a National Institutes of Health funded project coordinated at the Medical College of Georgia.  Outreach clinics are scheduled monthly for four cities across Georgia. The Pediatric Sickle Cell Clinic also serves as coordinator of informing, educating and tracking for the newborn screening program for approximately two-thirds of the state of Georgia.  Screening and confirmation testing for sickle cell disease and carriers is offered as well as outpatient care and transfusion therapy for pre-operative preparation within the Stroke Prevention guidelines.

Multidisciplinary Team
The Pediatric Hematology-Oncology team is dedicated to the care of all children battling cancer and blood diseases.  The search for better ways to treat these diseases has MCG Children's Medical Center researchers looking for a way to bolster the body's immune system in fighting cancers and coordinating a North American study to try to prevent strokes in children with sickle cell disease.
