Gastroenterology and Hepatology

The Gastroenterology/Hepatology Department offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, bile ducts and pancreas. 

A well-equipped endoscopy suite performs all diagnostic and therapeutic upper endoscopic and colonoscopic examinations, as well as visualization of the small intestine through enteroscopy.  Equipment is available to evaluate esophageal motor function as well as evaluate patients for gastroesophageal reflux.  Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is available for visualization of the hepato-biliary system and the pancreatic duct as well as for the performance of therapeutic procedures involving these organs. 

Diagnostic endoscopic ultrasound is also available.  This technique allows ultrasonic visualization through the esophagus, stomach and duodenum to allow close examination of the mediastinum, esophagus, stomach, pancreas and biliary systems.  The esophageal pill-cam is available as is the Given Capsule Imagining System for evaluation of the small intestine. 

The Section also offers endoscopic therapies including stenting of malignant lesions of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, placement of percutaneous gastrostomy tubes, endoscopic mucosal resection, and STRETTA procedure for reflux.  Complete diagnostic services are available for patients with liver diseases including liver biopsy and for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with acute and chronic viral hepatitis. 

Gastroenterology/Hepatology works closely with General Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery and Surgical Oncology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Radiology, and Hematology/Oncology.  Together we provide the region with the only integrated approach to gastrointestinal, liver and pancreatic disorders.
