Pituitary Services at MCG
The pituitary or the “master gland” as it is often referred to, is located at the base of the brain behind and between the eyes. This small, peanut-shaped gland secretes the hormones that control growth, sexual development, urine output and many other life functions. It also serves as the watchdog for other hormone-producing glands such as the thyroid and gonads to ensure they are making the correct amount of hormones. So, a pituitary tumor can definitely be dangerous and life-threatening if not properly diagnosed and treated. The MCG Health System Team provides these patients with a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment and takes a one-on-one approach with patient care. Medications and drug treatments are used to suppress a tumor and surgery or stereotactic radiosurgery, such as the state of the art Gamma Knife, can be performed to eliminate a tumor.
The MCG Health System team of physicians include neurosurgeons, endocrinologists, radiation oncologists, interventional radiologists, ophthalmologists, ENTs and psychiatrists working together to determine the best treatment options for the patient and ensure the patient gets the best care and continuous follow-up visits.
